Premier League (English First Division pre-1992)

Arsenal Historic Trophies List

Premier League (English First Division pre-1992)

Years Won: 1930–31, 1932–33, 1933–34, 1934–35, 1937–38, 1947–48, 1952–53, 1970–71, 1988–89, 1990–91, 1997–98, 2001–02, 2003–04.

The Premier League title, or its predecessor the First Division, is the domestic league championship. Arsenal have won it thirteen times, a record that places them third in the all-time English top-flight standings behind Manchester United and Liverpool. The Premier League itself officially recognises those pre-1992 honours as equivalent. The most famous of these is the 2003–04 "Invincibles" season, where the club went unbeaten in all 38 league matches. The 1988–89 title was decided by Michael Thomas’s last-minute goal at Anfield. The 1930s dominance under Herbert Chapman, with three consecutive titles from 1932–33 to 1934–35, remains a statistical outlier in English football history.

FA Cup

Years Won: 1930, 1936, 1950, 1971, 1979, 1993, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2020.

Arsenal hold the record for the most FA Cup victories, with fourteen. The 1971 final against Liverpool ended 2–1 after extra time. The 2014 and 2015 wins under Arsène Wenger ended a nine-year trophy drought. The 2020 victory was played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2003 final against Southampton was a 1–0 win. The 1979 final, a 3–2 win over Manchester United, was decided by Alan Sunderland’s late winner.

UEFA Champions League (European Cup pre-1992)

Years Won: None.

Arsenal have never won the UEFA Champions League or its predecessor, the European Cup. The closest they came was in 2005–06, when they reached the final in Paris and lost 2–1 to Barcelona after goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was sent off in the 18th minute. The 2008–09 semi-final loss to Manchester United, the 2003–04 quarter-final exit to Chelsea, and the 2015–16 round-of-16 elimination by Barcelona are other near-misses. Since the 2016–17 season, Arsenal have not qualified for the competition.

UEFA Europa League (UEFA Cup pre-2009)

Years Won: None.

Arsenal have never won the UEFA Europa League or its predecessor, the UEFA Cup. They reached the final in 2018–19, losing 4–1 to Chelsea. The 2019–20 campaign ended in a quarter-final defeat to Olympiacos on away goals. The 2020–21 semi-final loss to Villarreal, managed by former Arsenal boss Unai Emery, was a notable result.

EFL Cup (League Cup)

Years Won: 1987, 1993.

Arsenal have won the EFL Cup twice. The 1987 final against Liverpool was decided by a 2–1 win. The 1993 win over Sheffield Wednesday came via a replay after a 1–1 draw. The club has reached the final eight times but lost six of those, including the 2011 final to Birmingham City and the 2018 final defeat to Manchester City.

FA Community Shield (Charity Shield pre-2002)

Years Won: 1930, 1931, 1933, 1934, 1938, 1948, 1953, 1991, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2020, 2023.

The Community Shield is a pre-season match between the Premier League champion and the FA Cup winner. Arsenal have won it seventeen times. The 1991 win was shared with Tottenham Hotspur after a 0–0 draw. The 2023 win over Manchester City was decided on penalties after a 1–1 draw. Arsenal’s seventeen wins are the most of any club.

What to Check

  • Official Club Sources: The Arsenal website maintains a trophy count that includes all competitions. Check the "Honours" section for the official version.
  • Regulatory Bodies: The Premier League, FA, and UEFA each maintain their own records of winners. These are the most authoritative sources for verifying specific years and competitions.
  • Historical Context: Some trophies, like the 1991 Community Shield shared with Tottenham, are not universally recognised as outright wins. Verify the format of the competition in question.
  • Disputed Claims: Some fan media and unofficial sources may claim additional honours, such as the 1987–88 Football League Centenary Trophy. These are not official and should be treated with skepticism.
